Karen and Tim had decided to take a three-month backpacking vacation in the Great Lakes area, Lake Michigan to be exact. Karen was an attorney for a small law firm in her home town of Smithtown, USA. Tim was a logger for a small local company that logged the large mountain forests of Southern Oregon and Wyoming.
Karen and Tim set out on their backpacking adventure but soon become romantically involved and return home to be married in a local church in their hometown of Smithtown. Once they were husband and wife, they decide to finish their backpacking trip as they had originally planned. During their trip, Karen discovered that Tim had fallen from the top of a tall white pine tree that he was topping in the Oregon forest a year or so ago. Tim had been severely injured and airlifted to a hospital where he managed to survive. Karen had known Tim for many years but did not know that Tim had been injured and almost died. Tim now had a fear of climbing and a fear of dying in the forest that was his livelihood. Tim’s fear and his male ego came into serious conflict, and his wife Karen decided that Tim should get back on the horse that threw him, and face his fears. Karen realized that Tim could die in the attempt to rescue his self-confidence, but she allowed Tim to attempt to climb his Man Tree as he called it.
As Karen and Tim continue on to Yellowstone National Park, they take a guided backpacking trip down into the park. The meet up with some grizzly bears that are not very friendly and the rangers must kill one of them as the story progresses. This part of the story brings in more and more characters as the story unfolds and soon Tim and Karen find they suddenly have found a real camaraderie with their fellow backpackers.
During the vacation, Karen becomes pregnant and discovers she is carrying twins. Karen soon discovers that something is amiss with the pregnancy and she eventually looses one of the twins. The second twin is born and is a healthy loving child. At least that is what her parents believe. During the child’s first visit to her doctor for a checkup along with an X-ray of her head to locate the source of a sinus infection, the doctor finds a mass in the child’s brain just like her fathers.
This story moves from one life adventure to another with little rest for the reader. You will find yourself lost in the affairs of the characters as if you were traveling with them on their adventures.
